Richard Mille Launches A 'NEW' Playful Smiley Dial Watch

Prestigious watchmaker Richard Mille puts a smile on everyone’s faces with the new RM 88 Automatic Tourbillon Smiley. Describing the watch, the brand says it serves as the epitome of joy and positivity and greatly influences pop culture across generations. Richard Mille has unveiled its creative and technical flair with this forward-thinking timepiece available in only 50 units.

The watch took three years to come to life and vividly celebrates the iconic Smiley illustration, which was drawn by Franklin Loufrani almost 50 years ago.

So, how does it look?

The ‘SMILE’

On the skeletonised dial face, you can see a yellow circle with two oval eyes and a wide opened mouth – The Smiley! This memorable design was drawn by Franklin Loufrani years ago and became an iconic symbol in the brand’s collection. This playful and emotion-driven time-teller impressively emphasises Mille’s core values.

The RM 88 Automatic Winding Tourbillon Smiley timepiece features the yellow gold smiley in a nice tripartite case. The smiling face sits comfortably amidst a prickly cactus, pink flamingo and cocktail glass, which will turn your frown upside down.

The happy ensemble includes golden pineapple, a blossoming flower, a rainbow, and rays of sunshine, each appliqued on an auxiliary base plate. However, the smiley sits above the motion-work bridge featuring drawn edges and polished turns.

BEZEL & CASE BACK

The bezel and the case back are made from ATZ white ceramic. ATZ is one of the world's hardest materials (second to diamonds) and is highly resistant to scratches. The manufacturers crafted the bezel and case back material from tubes of aluminium powder and injected them at 2000 bars.

They used diamond tools to meticulously and painstakingly design the curved bezel and give the satin finish. The 18ct 5N Red gold case band gives a unique contrast.

MECHANICS

On the mechanical side, the new Richard Mille timepiece comes with the new Calibre CRM T7. It is a skeletonised automatic tourbillon movement with minute, hour and function displays. The bridges are Grade 5 titanium and have a complex double PBD coating in gold and black.

The crown flaunts the signature Smiley icon with the case band in red gold on the outside. The RM 88 Tourbillon Smiley’s movement forms a surreal scene. It is not just fun to look at but demonstrates Richard Mille’s true mastery in crafting miniature sculptures with utmost finesse.

CONCLUSION

The quest for perfection is omnipresent in Richard Mille’s history. The brand forever leaves the collectors spellbound with its watchmaking of the highest order. It is not long before the new tourbillon becomes another most-coveted creation by the brand, securing a good value when you sell your luxury watch in the secondary market. After all, the limited count of 50 will be over in a blink!
