Sotheby’s Announces Special Omega Speedmasters Auction Sale

While vintage Omega Speedmasters are becoming more valuable to collectors all across the world and Apollo 11 commemorating its 50th anniversary, Sotheby’s plans to present an upcoming dedicated Speedmaster sale on 19th July, New York. Thus, before you head out to ‘sell my watch’ or ‘sell watches’, let’s take a look at what Speedmaster references this auction dubbed ‘Omega Speedmaster: To The Moon And Black’ would represent.

Sotheby’s Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Sale

The historical auction will be held on July 19th in New York. It is just a few days before the 50th anniversary of the legendary Apollo 11 mission to walk on the lunar surface. Indeed, it is now 50years since Buzz Aldrin took his first steps on the Moon wearing the Speedmaster – a moment that changed horological history forever.

However, Sotheby’s auction will have some of the most significant, expensive and rarest Speedmaster references of the world, including two reference 2915-1s. One is the original Omega Speedmaster (circa 1959) ever made to go to the Moon and another, Alaska III Speedmaster that was created for the NASA’s 1978 Space Shuttle program.

The 2915-1 Omega Speedmaster watches are estimated to go up to £159, 526 and £199,360 respectively. In May of 2018 at a Phillips auction, one example of 2915-1 Speedmaster sold for £325,615, becoming the costliest Speedmaster ever sold at auction. However, there has been no estimate for the Alaska III.

The Growing Omega Speedmaster Market

Sotheby’s auction sale indeed supports the fact that the market of vintage Speedmaster seems to be growing. Moreover, it may also be called as the new Daytona. The fact is that the Omega Speedmaster is today considered as a highly valuable and collectable watch, thereby justifying its six-figure prices.

However, in the market of vintage Daytona, rare dial variations are usually the significant factor that yearns for the astonishing prices. Conversely, high prices in the market of vintage Speedmaster are generally dictated by the watch’s age.
