Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 Limited Edition Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Lunar Landing

Omega celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing, releasing a gold Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 Limited Edition watch. However, the watch is not inspired by the original timepiece that went to the moon but indeed, inspired by the one that was presented to the astronauts for the successful lunar landing. The timepiece was made of 18ct gold featuring a rare burgundy bezel and an engraving on the case back, stating: ‘to mark man’s conquest of space with time, through time, on time.’ Whether you are planning to ‘sell watches’ or ‘sell my watch’ and raise some quick cash, let’s first take a look at the new Speedmaster 50th Anniversary Limited Edition timepiece that still today remains true to that coveted design.

The 50th Anniversary Speedmaster Limited Edition Model

The new commemorative Speedmaster has been fabricated in 18ct ‘Moonshine’ gold that is Omega’s patent new alloy having a paler hue than conventional yellow gold. This unique proprietary yellow gold alloy is more resistance to fading over time. However, the new watch comes with an 18ct gold bracelet and a burgundy ceramic bezel. This Omega Speedmaster watch is limited to only 1,014 pieces.

Moreover, the new commemorative model has the inscription that reads ‘Apollo 11- 50th Anniversary- 1969-2019 The First Watch Worn On The Moon’. The watch is run by Master Chronometer manual-winding Calibre 3861.

A Brief Look at The Inspiring History

Launched in 1957, the Omega Speedmaster was often primarily worn by U.S. Air Force pilots, and many of them became astronauts in the 1960s NASA’s space program. Walter Schirra was one of the astronauts who took his Speedmaster CK2998 watch on the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission that revolved the Earth about six times.

However, while NASA in 1964 was looking for a timepiece it could depend on for every flight mission, many manufacturers, including Omega, put forward watches for rigorous tests like shock, thermal, vibration and others. Interestingly, it was only the Omega Speedmaster that survived the test and became the only watch to accompany the NASA’s Human Space Flight Program, followed by the Gemini Program that aimed for a lunar landing.

Nonetheless, the original Speedmaster that went to the moon was created in a limited edition of 1,014 pieces. The manufacturer presented Edition number 1 to President Richard Nixon and the Edition number 2 to Vice-President Spiro Agnew; though both the watches were returned due to the strict gifting protocol of the government. However, while the politicians and leaders of the Swiss watch industry were offered the Edition numbers 29 to 32, the brand released the numbers 33 to 1,000 for selling to the general public. Lastly, the Edition numbers 1,001 to 1,014 were known to offer to the astronauts of later space missions.
